LET’S CELEBRATE OUR DIVERSITY KERALITES ONAM HARVEST MONTH

Sisters, Brothers and Siblings:

It is an honour and a privilege to be the elected Toronto CUPW Local President. Our Local boasts diversity and I am proud to be part of it and to recognize it.

This month Keralites from India’s southern most Province will celebrate Onam, a harvest festival celebrated worldwide by Malayalee’s.  Onam is a celebration that embodies cultural unity and joy. It spans ten days, with the grandest celebration on Thiruvonam, the 15th of September this year. Intricate Pooka lamps, which are made from fresh flowers, adorn homes and community spaces, while each day brings new traditions. The final day features the famous Onam Sadhya (Lunch), a vegetarian feast on banana leaves with over 25 delicious dishes. Cultural activities like Thiruvathira, Kaikottikali, boat races, and games add to the festivities.

Let us unite to honour this beautiful tradition and celebrate the spirit of Onam.

Many CUPW members claim Malayalee origin. We are proud of the Malayalee’s harvest festival in CUPW and invite all our sisters, brothers, and siblings to celebrate Malayalee’s harvest festival Month by participating in an event or activity near you!

In Solidarity,

Mark Lubinski
